As evolving as the program is, its interface has remained mostly the same since its early days, taking advantage of the computer’s screen wherever possible. You find a lot of the features buried behind invisible check boxes and toolbars. However, you shouldn’t even have to see all of them. They’re often just one click away. It’s like an old-fashioned steam locomotive. Once it comes to a stop in a tunnel, you forget all about it.

This is no longer a “if it’s not in software, it doesn’t exist” sort of review. These new capabilities are not just for the DSLR user; they have their place in the burgeoning world of mobile workflow. The iPad Pro, with its Pencil, has been in my lap and in my hand at least twice a week. I did not even know how to use a computer until Adobe Photoshop introduced me to the world of digital imaging.

But I haven’t been using the program on the iPad Pro. I have been replacing a big, heavy laptop with a much lighter and more maneuverable iPad Pro. Only a few of Photoshop’s latest features are available on the iPad Pro yet: Photoshop Creative Cloud, some of Photoshop’s actions, and Photoshop Sketch.

I think it will be five years or less until PCs become the standard input tool for all kinds of creativity, and there is no doubt in my mind that it will be an iPad Pro or some similar small form factor device. The tablet market is just exploding, and it’s powered by Chrome OS. Linux is coming. Why not?

Last month’s update featured many innovative new features, including the addition of the Pen Tool for more precise and creative illustration. The Pen Tool makes it easy to draw freehand shapes or paths that can then be easily edited to create intricate and exotic objects. You can even change the size and shape with a simple drag of your mouse. The Camera Raw’s layer panel retains the ability to anchor elements in a single, handy location. You can place any layer in Photoshop’s Camera Raw interface at any position. You can then alter the settings utilizing the Layers panel.

The Nov 2013 update also introduced Channels, a crisp, intuitive and customizable image workspace, that shows the underlying image information in a design. The Channels panel offers radial gradients, composite images and a variety of other options, and even shows the light and color of any pixel in the image you work on.

Some of the new features of this update enable better control over the shared desktop. The new sharing options save changes in a separate folder so you can share the changes between your desktop and the cloud. Although the new sharing is currently only available with Address or Email, the option to share by web or mobile is planned for the next version of Photoshop. It will also let you share the changes on the network with other computers without requiring Adobe Acrobat or Lightroom.

Other new features include enhancements in the undo/redo tool along with the addition of a new multithreaded copy/paste, painting tools such as Selection, Lasso, Eraser, and Shapes tools; new Creative Styles (Best of design and Elements best of logo templates available for free) and the introduction of new button for our legendary Adobe Stock Library. At a fundamental level, Shapes and Raster Images are different as graphic elements in that Raster Image assigns absolute values (pixel intensity) to each and every pixel. Shapes are just Points and Lines, with only the inherent geometry defining an object’s shape and size. The Absolute Pixel Color (or more commonly referred to as “Pixel Color”) of each and every point on the line or shape is the same regardless of your view of the image. The Absolute Pixel Color of a Shape or Raster Image (or simply “Pixel Color”) is defined by that geometry alone, and is an arbitrary numeric value (between 0 and 255 inclusive) assigned to the object as it appears in the image. Pixel Color is different from the “color” of an object in that the color of an object is the particular RGB values present in the pixels of the “object”, regardless of how it appears in the image. There are often different color values for the same object, and there is no inherent relationship between the Pixel Color and the color of the object.
