Before we can import a machine, we have to back up the data on the virtual machine first. AllData provides two data import/export options for you to manage data that is on a physical machine. If your virtual machines are data-only, then you can import and export virtual machine state information to any location. The virtual machine state information is a lightweight format and is represented by a tab-delimited file called Virtual Machine State. To export a physical machine to Virtual Machine State, you use the ExportAs VM Statefrom the Virtual Machine State. This method allows you to backup data stored on a physical machine and restore that data to a new physical machine.

If you want to import a machine to your virtualization environment, then you must first back up the data that is on the physical machine. To do this, you must first convert your physical machine state to the Virtual Machine State format, also known as the VM Import/Export format. While the physical machine state is represented by a tab-delimited file called Virtual Machine State, the VM Import/Export format is represented as a ZIP file.

VM Import/Export is a feature that provides you the ability to import and export data from existing physical environments to Amazon EC2. From existing on-premises environments, you can import virtual machine images into Amazon EC2 and export them to your existing virtualization environment.

Choose to delete a physical machine that is not in theData Model. When you are finished choosing your physical machines, you can eitherimporta newvirtualmachine, or you can select a virtualmachine image to import.

When you start an export operation, you have the opportunity to choose what EC2 instance to import the virtual disk image to.Choose from a list of EC2 instances that Amazon EC2 creates, selected by their lifecycle. A health check is run on each instance before it is used for export, and a brief window is provided to see the overall health status of the instance and the progress of the import. The end user of the exported image can choose to launch the exported image immediately, or put it in a holding queue while the instance is still running.
You can import Windows and Linux VMs that use VMware ESX or Workstation, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix Xen virtualization formats. And you can export previously imported EC2 instances to VMware ESX, Microsoft Hyper-V or Citrix Xen formats. For a full list of supported operating systems, versions, and formats, please consult the VM Import section of the Amazon EC2 User Guide. We plan to add support for additional operating systems, versions and formats in the future.
If you click theImport CDbutton in the app window, you can change the format settings dictating how songs are encoded, copied and compressed. Apple goes with a default format called AAC, or Advanced Audio Coding, which the company explains rivals the quality of audio CDs and sounds as good as or better than MP3 files encoded at the same bitrate, referring to the amount of data that goes into the sound files.
Note: When you import images, you must specify the destination of your instance before you can start your export or import operation. You must also specify the region of the destination instance.
